Library partners with Scheller for Proactive Course Reserves Pilot

This spring, the Georgia Tech Library is partnering with the Scheller College of Business for a Proactive Course Reserves pilot program aimed at making education more affordable for students.

As part of the exciting new initiative, librarians will review fall 2023 Scheller courses to discover if it is possible to purchase materials to support high expense and high-enrollment classes.

“What sets this effort apart is that our librarians will reach out to faculty about the potential cost-saving purchases,” said John Mack Freeman, Head of Public Services Librarian. “This moves past our current passive model where faculty recommend purchases for us.”

Dean Dr. Leslie Sharp said the Library is especially excited about the pilot program because it truly helps everyone in the course.

“The Georgia Tech Library is committed to helping students meet their academic goals, and reducing the cost of a class is a part of that,” said Sharp. “We are not waiting on the sidelines for someone to ask what needs to be done. Instead, we’re pushing up our sleeves and saying, ‘How we can use our expertise to advance student affordability?’”

Though the effort is immense, the rewards have huge potential to help students, said Freeman.

“It’s complex work behind the scenes, but every course where we can provide something gets us a little closer to our goal.”
