About

The Georgia Tech Library Artist-in-Residence program enhances and expands the current educational experience through arts-based programming as it relates to STEM fields and Georgia Tech areas of study. A visiting artist engages the Georgia Tech community in artistic and aesthetic explorations that connect people to scholarship and new ideas. The Artist-in-Residence program supports the mission of the library through arts-based programming and engagement as a core responsibility of the artist-in-residence. This program is managed by librarian, Catherine Manci.

Previous artists include: Deanna Sirlin (2022), Tristan Al-Haddad (2023), and Bojana Ginn (2024).

About Orchid Dreams:

Dr. Bojana Ginn’s work explores the potential for wellness in digital and physical spaces, using art as a transformative tool to advocate for healthcare as a fundamental human right. Her practice draws upon medical research on beneficial frequencies of light and rhythm, along with the psychology of color and shape, to craft experiences that nurture the mind and body. By layering medical and artistic concepts, she creates both physical and virtual spaces designed to enhance mental wellness and promote longevity. AI-generated forms, guided by the principles of parametric biology and biomimicry, are central to her work, reflecting a deep connection to nature while being informed by cutting-edge science

In their physical renderings, the Orchid Dreams sculptures are built with a combination of recyclable acrylic and mycelium that consumes plastic. This plastic-eating mycelium represents a significant innovation for our future, providing a sustainable solution to the growing global plastic waste crisis. The specific fungi possess the remarkable ability to transform waste into non-toxic organic substances, significantly mitigating the environmental impact.

The interactive video installation immerses visitors in the soothing rhythm of deep breathing, promoting relaxation, comfort, and focus. Its interactive elements respond to the audience’s biometrics—such as heart rate and oxygen levels—shaping the visuals on display. This dynamic interplay co-creates ethereal digital forms that invite viewers into a meditative space, fostering both reflection and emotional uplift.

About Polycentric Truthes

Al-Haddad and students transformed Galileo’s seminal text, Dialogue Concerning Two Chief Systems of the World – Day 1, into an expressive diagram titled Polycentric Truthes. The piece attempts to capture both the arguments of the text, as well as the deep structure of rhetorical world-making present in Galileo’s time -- and in our contemporary society of constructed realities.

Working with robotics Ph.D. candidate Gerry Chen, the team transformed the text into sketch, sketch into composition, composition into code, and code into matter. This was accomplished using Chen’s cable-driven, Human Style Painting Robot in conjunction with a custom designed and 3D-printed robotic end-effector capable of wet brush painting.

The installation was realized over a six-week period in early 2024 as a digitally co-constructed work.

Polycentric Truthes Installation

Polycentric Truthes is an interpretation of Galileo’s Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, but also serves as a commentary on the echo chambers within which contemporary society is situated.
