Linking to Library Resources

The Georgia Tech Library uses a proxy server for web security. This prevents unauthorized users from entering the library’s databases and eJournals and illegally downloading content.

We offer two different tools to make linking to restricted library resources a little easier.

Add GT Proxy Bookmark:

This tool allows you to connect to databases and eJournals without going through the library website. It is a "must have" for anyone who starts their research somewhere other than the library home page.

 Internet Explorer

STEP 1 - Show your Links Toolbar

View > Toolbars > Links

STEP 2 - Bookmark the "Add GT Proxy" link

Right-click on this Add GT Proxy link and choose "Add to Favorites." Create in the "Links" folder.

STEP 3 - Use it!

When you are on a webpage you'd like to run through the proxy server, simply click on the Add GT Proxy bookmark from your Links bar or favorites list.

 Firefox

STEP 1 - Show your Bookmarks Toolbar

View > Toolbars > Bookmarks Toolbar

STEP 2 - Bookmark the "Add GT Proxy" link

Drag this Add GT Proxy link to the bookmarks toolbar on your browser. Or right-click on this Add GT Proxy link and choose "Bookmark this link." Save in the "Bookmarks Menu" folder.

STEP 3 - Use it!

When you are on a webpage you'd like to run through the proxy server, simply click on the Add GT Proxy bookmark from your Bookmarks bar or menu.

 Safari & Chrome

STEP 1 - Show your Bookmarks Toolbar

View > Show Bookmarks Bar

STEP 2 - Bookmark the "Add GT Proxy" link

Drag this Add GT Proxy link to the bookmarks toolbar on your browser.

STEP 3 - Use it!

When you are on a webpage you'd like to run through the proxy server, simply click on the Add GT Proxy bookmark from your Bookmarks bar or menu.

 iPad & Android Tablets

STEP 1 - Go to this page:

http://library.gatech.edu/services/proxy.html

STEP 2 - Bookmark the page, then copy the text in the box

Edit the bookmark you just created by using the text you copied as the bookmark's URL, and name the bookmark Add GT Proxy

STEP 3 - Use it!

When you are on a webpage you'd like to run through the proxy server, simply click on the Add GT Proxy bookmark from your Bookmarks menu.

LinkMaker:

To link to a Library resource (e.g. electronic database, eJournal) on T-Square, WebCT, electronic syllabi or course web pages use this tool to create enhanced URLs.

Paste (Ctrl V) the link to your resource here: (Include http:// at the front)

New Enhanced URL:

  • Double-click (or triple-click) the text box above to select the whole URL.
  • (Use Ctrl-C to) copy the new enhanced URL.
  • (Use Ctrl-V to) paste the new enhanced URL into your document or browser.

With both of these tools you will still be prompted to authenticate with your GT ID and password, but the link will bring you directly to the eJournal or database. Once you pass through the proxy you will not be prompted again. However, please note that after 15 minutes of inactivity the proxy will automatically close and you will be required to login again.

Note: This process assumes you have a persistent URL. If the URL contains session information (as sometimes happens when you copy a link from a browser's address bar), it may not work. Also, this process is for subscribed resources – ‘free’ resources available on the web do not go through the proxy server. Please test all the links you add to T-Square, WebCT, or electronic syllabi.
